knoxville photographer Dave Carroll

I was first introduced to photography at an early age by my father. He was a career soldier in the British Army and that meant that we travelled a lot, and he was always documenting not only our lives, but also the various places throughout the world where we were stationed.

My father was a very keen and capable photographer, and he used a Yashica twin lens reflex camera with which I was completely fascinated! I am sure that this is where I get my love for old film cameras, and my preference for the square format image. He would shoot roll after roll of film with this machine and I would eagerly await seeing the results from his latest batch.

My first camera though was a Polaroid Land Camera (there's that square format again), and I loved that thing! I enabled me to shoot to my heart's content and instantly see the results. The learning process was very quick when you can see how badly you screwed up within sixty seconds!

The real turning point came, however, when I started to explore the work of other photographers. The images of British photographer David Bailey, in particular, had a huge impact on me. These were the type of photographs that I wanted to take! I was completely in awe of this man's work, and my mind was made up; this is what I wanted to do!

I've never really stopped taking photographs since that time, although my other love, music, meant that at times the picture taking was ignored for a while. Right now, I think that I am at one of the most creative points in my life and my love of photography is stronger than it has ever been, something that I find very exciting!
