Intimates

Few photographs of a woman are as intimate as those made in her own bedroom. The very fact that such a level of trust has been established creates a relationship between artist and subject that allows the capture of images that transcend the voyeuristic; photographs that celebrate feminine sensuality and sexuality, rather than simply exploit it. Sensitive eroticism needn’t be an oxymoron.

If the eyes are the windows to the soul, then a lady’s boudoir is surely the antechamber.

Bipeds

The first series of my new ‘Bipeds’ project. I love the randomness of old, expired Polaroid film, with it’s weird and wonderful developer marks, scratches and emulsion defects. This series was shot on Polacolor 100 film which expired in 2004 (camera was a Hasselblad 500C/M). Many thanks to my good friend Dee for continuing to tolerate my experimental shoots (and experimental materials)!

My 2012

So, it’s another new year, and a good time for me to make some decisions about the directions I want to take with my photography in 2012. Much to my chagrin, and due to various reasons I won’t go into here, I pretty much cruised through the last year, and my work suffered badly. I’m determined not to let this happen again. So, in no particular order, here are some goals I want to achieve in the coming year.

Dalena

Last weekend I headed down town with my good friend Dalena for a casual photo shoot. I didn’t have any particular locations in mind, but I did want to try some shots on the top level of the market square parking lot. These turned out really well, offering a different perspective and an interesting layered background.

Dalena

I chose my 1957 Leica M3 with 50mm Summicron lens for this shoot as it offers great quality results while being small and light to carry around. I used Kodak Tri-X film rated at 250 ASA and developed in HC-110.

Why I Don’t Shoot Weddings

I’ve nothing against weddings, I just don’t want to photograph them. In fact, I avoid them like the plague, at least as far as being the official photographer.

I love a well shot formal, but I'm always wondering what I'm missing elsewhere!

I’m often asked why, and I have a single, admittedly selfish, answer. Simply put, shooting the official wedding photographs means I can’t capture the other moments that happen on the periphery of the ceremony, the fleeting vignettes of life that you rarely experience at any other single gathering; the approving (and occasionally disapproving) glances between some family members, a young mans admiration for a bridesmaid, a bored child’s distraction, the misdemeanors of an inebriated relative, and numerous other equally fascinating tableaux.

Rolleiflex Rolleinar 1 Close Up Lens

Following on from my previous post about the Rolleiflex Automat MX-EVS, here is a shot taken with my Zeiss Opton equipped Rolleiflex with the Rolleinar 1 close-up lens attachment. The Rolleinar 1 allows you to focus closer than the 3 feet that the standard lens allows, and is very useful for frame-filling head shots. Rolleinars come in a range of strengths (1, 2 and 3), each allowing progressively closer focusing.

Portfolio – Streamscape

Shot in Norris, TN, this was the first 8×10 negative I exposed after acquiring a Sinar P camera last year. Shooting such a large format camera requires a completely different approach than medium format or 35mm and, as I was so new to it, I was very pleased with the outcome of this shot.

Streamscape – Sinar P, G-Claron 305mm

The sky was heavy with the threat of rain as I carried my gear along the stream to the small waterfall, and I knew that I wouldn’t have too long to set up and expose my film if I didn’t want to get caught in a downpour. I spent a few minutes setting up the tripod, trying to find a stable position for it on the muddy bank, and then quickly unpacked and set up the camera.

Polaroid Type 55 Project – Models Wanted

Jenn, shot with very expired Polaroid Type 55 film

In the days before digital cameras, with their ability to instantly review a shot, photographers only had one choice when it came to checking the lighting and composition of a scene; Polaroid Instant Film. An entire range of films were available in multiple formats and Polaroid film backs were available for almost all medium and large format cameras (and some 35mm models too).
