Leitz 50mm F/2.0 'Rigid' Summicron

My second shoot with the amazing Angelique (A.K.A. Frenchie) yielded some great images. We shot at and around the Grist Mill at Norris, TN, a location that provided plenty of shade from the harsh light and ridiculous heat of the early afternoon (95F and very humid), but unfortunately not the mosquitoes!

Although I packed my small selection of lenses for the Leica M3, I ended up using the Summicron for over 90% of the shots. I guess I’m just a 50mm kind of guy!

A quick word about using the Leica on this shoot. As much as I love shooting medium and large format, and also my Nikon F3 kit, it’s been a revelation using this small, compact rangefinder system. I can fit a complete five lens outfit, with accessories and plenty of film, into a small Domke shoulder bag (F6). It’s great for location use and means I can be completely mobile while photographing. With my larger systems, I usually find myself having to dump the large bags they require on the ground before being able to shoot, but with the Leica I can simply work out of the bag on my shoulder without it impeding my ability to get the shot. Very refreshing!

  1. After 20 years of shooting 8×10 and mostly pt/pd hand coated prints, I recently photographed for a day with a friend’s M3 and 50mm lens–and loved the freedom!
    These sample images are awesome!
Not having used 35mm for many years:
What Film and developer, EI and times were used??
I am offering one of my 8×10 cameras for sale: Phillips 8×10 Explorer, that I have used for location work; I am considering anM6TTL or M4.
Seeing your work here convinces me to do this!
    Thanks for your help,
    Steve

    1. Hi Steve,

I hope you’re keeping some 8×10 gear! I love the results from mine, but I have to agree about the freedom of going out with a compact RF setup. I got the Leica about a year and a half ago and it’s turned into my go to camera for pretty much everything.

For these, I used Arista Premium 400 (Tri-X) rated at 320 and developed in HC-110 dilution B for, from memory, 6.5 minutes.

      Hope this helps.

      Cheers,

      Dave
